So in Saskatchewan we find ourselves having to adapt VERY quickly to weather changes. Sun, blue sky and melting snow one day, the next day, icy roads, blizzards, freezing temperatures and gale force winds! (YES I am talking about the weather again.)
It's this fact of life that I'd like to think helps develop our resilience. In the winter time you either get over it and move on, or you stay miserable for 6 months.
I had a lesson about choosing to be miserable that I will never forget. I was on a call with my coach during my early on in my training when I was still a very nervous rookie, and during our discussion I said "Well when I just get to this place in my life/coaching skills/business then I will finally experience the joy I'm looking for."
And she said back to me, "What if you chose to experience joy now?".
I was so overwhelmed and consumed in all that I "had to do" as a Mom working full-time and taking classes, all the energy I DIDN'T have to do it all, and didn't really even know what I wanted, that this idea that I could choose joy in that very moment when I was working sooo hard to get there as a destination had never even crossed my mind. (Spoiler alert: there were a LOT of tears!)
When you are constantly striving and working to get to some end result, it gets very disappointing time and time again when you don't get there.
Can you relate? Have you ever felt like you were trying to get to some place, some achievement of some goal, where you can finally start to feel the way that you want to, but never got there?
This was the day that I realized that I could take responsibility for the way that I felt and choose differently. (Thanks Mom and Dad for trying to teach me this growing up. It landed eventually!)
So I've got some tricks, tips, and hacks for you to help you choose to feel differently the next time things do not feel good. And if that time is now, then start today!
Step 1 - Think about what the opposite of that negative feeling is. AKA. what you would like to be feeling.
Step 2 - Think about what that opposite feeling, the positive feeling, would feel like.
Step 3 - Right then and there, in that moment, CHOOSE to feel it. Even if you only do it for 10 seconds--tap into it for as long as you can.
These actions will do a couple of things:
1) It will give you a little boost of awareness and confidence that "oh, I AM in control. I CAN choose to feel differently."
2) It will rewire your brain and your reactions to start connecting to, and choosing, new and more resourceful ways of responding the next time something negative creeps in.
As cliché as this sounds, there is no destination. There is no "I'll feel better when *blank* happens." You only have today, and this very moment. And you also have a choice.
Choose to feel good.
